Ask the RD: So What’s the Deal with Dairy!?

Pouring a glass of milk

June is National Dairy Month! I am sure that you all know how much of a bad rap dairy has gotten over the years. From it being promoted constantly in the “Got Milk?” commercials to now people discouraging dairy and encouraging plant-based drinks instead. Do you find yourself eating food that you don't ev Do you find yourself eating food that you don't even like so that you can be "healthy"?

I once had a client tell me that she's been eating boiled chicken with steamed vegetables for her meals, no sauce, no nothing. I, trying not to show visible disgust on my face 😬, asked "Is that a meal that you enjoy?". She answered, "no! It's gross. But it's healthy so I have to eat it." My next question is "why?". Why do you have to eat a food that you don't like? What is the purpose of doing that? To be healthy? How is constantly feeding yourself food that doesn't feed your soul healthy?

You don't have to eat food that you don't like. You don't have to eat food that someone else told you you have to eat to be healthy. You don't have to eat food that you tell yourself that you need to eat to be healthy.

Check in with yourself during your next meal. Are you eating this meal in the name of health? Or are you eating it in the name of developing your relationship to food? And season your food.
I hear so often that someone in the body positive I hear so often that someone in the body positive community is shaming someone for weight loss, telling them that's a horrible thing to want. On the other hand, I see a lot of people saying weight loss is the only answer to things that even have nothing to do with weight.

What if we were in the middle? What if it's not either extreme?

There's no shame in desiring weight loss and I'm sorry if I or anyone else has made you feel that way. Why wouldn't someone want to lose weight when so many things are telling us that weight loss is the answer for all of our problems? I totally get it!

What I will say is that weight loss is not the answer. Weight loss is not a magical fix. There's so much more under that desire to lose weight whether that's needing to feel accepted or wanting to be able to run around with grand kids. Also, intentional weight loss doesn't work!! I'm sure that's not easy to hear. It does not work and the pursuit of it will lead to more and more challenges along the way.

What would it look like to dig deeper and see what's driving that desire to lose weight?

Work with me and find out. I will not work with you to help you lose weight. I will help you explore the deeper issues and work with you on accepting and respecting your body the way it is.
People often say how bad certain foods are. "What People often say how bad certain foods are. "What makes them bad?" They often don't know. They just go with the latest trend that says this food is bad and this food is good.

So now avocados and turmeric have become "basic" food when they were demonized before a white person said that they're okay and turned them into "superfoods". Check out @black.nutritionist awesome post on superfoods 👌🏾

And how about MSG? Monosodium glutamate. How many of you believe that it's detrimental to your health? Where did that belief come from?

Stop demonizing foods that you just don't understand. Do some research from REPUTABLE sources. Ask questions. Don't just jump on the train because Suzy said some food is bad when really she's just xenophobic.

What are some other foods that often get demonized for no reason?
I had a client ask me this recently. She adopted a I had a client ask me this recently. She adopted a diet specifically of foods deemed acceptable by white people and stopped eating her own culture's foods because she was told that they are "unhealthy". She was told that she is only allowed to eat those foods once a week on "cheat days".

How can we work towards accepting food from our cultures when we still get messages like this ALL THE DANG TIME!?

We need to learn to accept our foods, but white people, you also have to stop spreading these messages around as well.

You need to be included in changing the narrative. It's not all up to us.
I am so happy to let you all know that I am now of I am so happy to let you all know that I am now offering meal support!!

This is for you if you struggle with eating meals or snacks throughout the day, if you want help with accountability, if you struggle with using behaviors during meals, if you need help with the emotions that come up during meals, or if you are looking for a sense of community.

I will be offering this multiple times throughout the week individually or in groups.

This is for everyone! Questions? Let me know below or send me a message.

Looking forward to hearing from you 😁
*Disclaimer: I am in no way promoting "clean eatin *Disclaimer: I am in no way promoting "clean eating"*

Let's think about the concept of eating "clean" for a minute. First of all, when someone tells me they're eating clean, I have to dig and get information on what "clean" means to them. But just to generalize here, it often includes things from what I call the California diet: quinoa, grass fed meat, sprouted grains, avocado, whole fruits and veggies, and organic, "low processed" foods.

That sounds great and dandy, right? "I just need to include all these things into my diet and stop buying highly processed chips, spreads, grains, and conventional fruits and vegetables. Now that I figured this out, I'm going to go tell all my friends and family that they need to start eating clean!"

It may sound so simple to a lot of you. Take out the "bad" stuff and add in the "good" stuff. But what do you not think of when looking at this list? Or what do you think of and ignore because it's in the name of health? When I look at this, all I see is $$$$.

There are so many things wrong with this concept of "eating clean"! How can we tell people they need to not only spend $$$ on food in order to be healthy, but also that the foods that are from their cultures don't even fit!

Stop promoting concepts like this! Concepts that cause people to conform to your white standards and demonize foods that they enjoy.

Let go of beliefs that food like this (which is typically "white people food") is better for you than your own cultural foods.

If you have questions about this or you want to work on not thinking like this, please reach out to me and let's have a conversation.

I know this was long, but I was feeling a type of way writing this. Thanks for reading! 🙌🏾
