Ask the RD: So What’s the Deal with Dairy!?

Pouring a glass of milk

June is National Dairy Month! I am sure that you all know how much of a bad rap dairy has gotten over the years. From it being promoted constantly in the “Got Milk?” commercials to now people discouraging dairy and encouraging plant-based drinks instead. Welcoming myself back to Instagram with an introdu Welcoming myself back to Instagram with an introductory post to my new and not as new followers and friends 😊

My name is Brianna! I'm a registered dietitian and the owner of The Celestial Life where I provide nutrition counseling to those struggling with eating disorders and disordered eating.

Some fun facts about me:

I love being creative. I have too many hobbies from candle and shower steamer making to crocheting to playing instruments, baking, and pole dancing. Being able to express myself in those ways makes me so happy.

I love card and board games. I can be a pretty sore loser. 😋

My passion is social justice. My practice is social justice based and you will see lots of posts on the topic. If I disappear for months at a time, it's because this work is tiring and I need to get off social media for a bit. 😔

What makes me and my practice unique is that I allow my clients to take the lead in their care. I am there to guide you, but you are the true expert of you. I also don't subscribe to whole frameworks and movements easily. I dig deeper, ask questions, and analyze.

But with all that said, I'm happy to be back and I've been working on some great things behind the scenes! In the mean time, I am open for new clients so if you live in CT, NY, CA, VT, and more and you are looking for nutrition counseling, DM me so we can get started 🤗 or just follow along for the ride!

Feel free to share a fun fact or two about you in the comments! I'd love to get to know you all better.
Let's talk about HAES for a moment. HAES stands fo Let's talk about HAES for a moment. HAES stands for Health At Every Size. I love the concept of this movement. Basically, it is saying that anyone, regardless of their size, has the ability to achieve health by focusing on behaviors rather than weight. It brings light to the FACT that you can't tell someone's health by how they look.

I have been a proponent of HAES. I've spoken to my clients about it as recently as a few weeks ago. The premise of it is fine and it has some pretty big holes in it.

Like I said above, HAES assumes you have the ability to achieve health. This leaves so many people out of the conversation: people who are marginalized, who are oppressed. If a black, fat person goes to the doctor, what is that experience going to be like for them? If a trans or disabled person goes to the gym, what will that experience be like? If a person has low income and is in need of anything, what will that be like?

It is no secret that oppression and trauma have so many negative impacts on health in the physical, mental, social, and other senses. Depression, lack of jobs, lack of housing, lack of access to food, increased stress, and so on...

I put healthy in quotes because maybe you have your own definition of what health is. According to the World Health Organization, health is "a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity".

If one is oppressed, can they truly be healthy?

When utilizing these frameworks and backing these movements, give them a little bit more thought. What are they missing? Where are the holes? Can you have a framework made by people who don't represent everyone, be for everyone?

These are my #fridaythoughts! I'd love to hear your thoughts and opinions below.

I am so excited for this! My amazing friend and co I am so excited for this! My amazing friend and colleague @yoursouthasiantherapist and I will be doing an Instagram live next Wednesday! We will be having an open conversation about being BIPOC providers in the eating disorder field and discussing white supremacy and systemic racism. We are hoping that this is going to be an important and impactful conversation. If you have any questions for us, put them in the comments or send us a DM!

We hope to see you there 🤗
